  20.      The 3 1/2 inch, Commodore 1581 disk drive was released in 1987 as a
  21. 3160 block, 800K mass storage device, at nearly two-and-a half times more
  22. disk space than a double-sided 1571 drive.  Even though you cannot use the
  23. 1581 drive to store copy protected programs, it is an ideal data storage
  24. unit for compressing word processer spell checking and thesaurus files on
  25. to one disk.  Even larger data base programs such as the 574 Relative block
  26. "trans.file" used in Silva Porter's Personal Finance can now process
  27. information more rapidly due to much quicker data management transfer
  28. rates.
  29.  
  30.      Even though the 1581 floppy disk drive has been around since 1987, not
  31. a lot of support has been shown from commercial software companies, until
  32. The 1581 Tool Kit appeared with its set of professional utilities.  It also
  33. provides programmers with inside information on the 1581 workings and even
  34. includes a diagnostic public domain program called "1581.DIAG" that was
  35. written by a concerned Commodore employee to detect manufacturing 1581
  36. problem Bugs.  I ran this program on my own 1581 drive and found that a
  37. jumper (J1) on the main PC board had been left off in production which
  38. affects the 6 ms step rate.  Not only will this program detect the
  39. improperly grounded jumpers on the 1581, but will check to see if you have
  40. the updated WD1772 chip which replaced the WD1770 IC's used in early
  41. production drives, causing corrupted disk directories.

  44.  SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  45.  -------------------

  47.      The 1581 TOOL KIT operates with either a C64, SX64 or C128/128D
  48. computer that autoboots directly to the C64 mode.  It does require that you
  49. use at least one 1581 drive and will also support the use of a second 1581
  50. Commodore drive.  The 1581 Tool Kit also features fast copiers, allowing
  51. copying of files between a 1581 drive and either a 1541 or 1571 disk drive
  52. with different device numbers.

  55.  WHAT YOU GET !!!

  58.      The 1581 Tool Kit is composed of ten different types of disk utility
  59. programs from within a main menu which can be loaded up from any disk drive
  60. device number.  The latest version (v2) upgrade has a number of
  61. improvements over the original program first released in 1988.  These
  62. refinements now include:  New commands added to the Single Drive Fast Data
  63. Copier, such as a Video RAM (64K) toggle ON/OFF for 128D or C128 computers
  64. equipped with the expanded video RAM. Upgrading the C128's video RAM to 64K
  65. requires replacing the 4416 or 4164 RAM chips with a pair of 4464
  66. integrated circuits.  An easier method is to purchase the C-128 VIDEO RAM
  67. UPGRADE CAT# COO592 from Software Support International.  Also included is
  68. a 1750 or 1764 REU ON/OFF toggle, either allowing for fewer disk swapping
  69. passes when copying files using only a single drive.

  72.  FAST DATA COPIERS
  73.  -----------------

  75.      Fast data copiers are used to make fast backups of unprotected
  76. software.  From within this option you are given the opportunity of either
  77. using a single drive or a dual drive copier.  The single copier will take
  78. approximately 10 minutes with 16 disk swaps to copy a complete 3 1/2"
  79. diskette while the dual drive will require only about two minutes when
  80. using two 1581 disk drives.  If however, you have a 128D or a C128 with the
  81. video RAM (64K) installed, only eight passes will now be required to copy
  82. the same 1581 diskette using the single Fast Copier program.  In a like
  83. fashion, even fewer passes will be required if you have either a 1764 REU,
  84. at three passes or the 175O REU requiring only a two pass disk swap to copy
  85. a complete 3 1/2" diskette.

  88.  FAST FILE COPIER

  91.      This program is designed to transfer single files back and forth
  92. between 1541, 1571 or 1581 drive formats.  In the two drive copier version,
  93. you can select from the menu which disk drive you want as your source and
  94. destination drive from 8, 9, 10 or even 11 device numbers.  This program
  95. will also detect if you are using two 1581 drives by switching on the
  96. subdirectory routine to copy partitions between drives.  The single drive
  97. copier will still require you to make disk swaps until the copy is
  98. completed.  As mentioned above, the use of video RAM or a REU device can
  99. cut this disk swapping to a minimum however.

  102.  DIRECTORY EDITOR

  105.      This programming tool allows you to modify the directory of almost any
  106. unprotected 1581 diskette.  It includes an alphabetizer, rename disk
  107. option, and the ability to lock or unlock files.  It also lets you insert
  108. separators in your directory for easier readability and supports partitions
  109. on the 1581.  You can also switch between four different device numbered
  110. disk drives for easy access.

  113.  TRACK & SECTOR TRACKER

  116.      If you want to examine the data on your 3 1/2" diskette by their track
  117. and sector, then this utility module is what you're looking for.  You can
  118. also modify sectors and print Hex/Dissemble listings too.

  121.  FILE TRACK & SECTOR TRACKER
  122.  ---------------------------

  124.      The File Track & Sector Tracker allows you to examine, modify or
  125. repair a file directly from a diskette.  It also gives you the option of
  126. seeing data in either a DISASSEMBLE MODE or a HEX/ASCII MODE format.  The
  127. DISASSEMBLE function allows you to modify the opcode and the operand while
  128. the HEX/ASCII mode allows you to change the block on the file as well as
  129. display the complete Track and Sector grid.

  132.  PARTITION CREATOR

  135.      The Partition creator is just that, but much more!  Trying to use the
  136. "OPEN" command as described in the Commodore's 1581 manual is painful and
  137. confusing, to say the least.  That's where The 1581 Toolkit comes in, to
  138. open, close, create and even delete partitions with ease.  This module has
  139. a section that will display all 80 tracks on your 3 1/2" diskette and
  140. allows you to jump from partition to partition for quicker viewing.

  143.  FAST FORMATTER

  146.      When you select this mode you can now format 1581 diskettes about 30%
  147. faster than normal.  You also have the option to perform custom or partial
  148. formatting by selecting the beginning and ending tracks to be formatted on
  149. a diskette.

  152.  ERROR SCANNER

  155.      The Error Scanner can be used to detect whether or not a disk has any
  156. DOS errors.  In this portion of the program a visual representation of the
  157. integrity as well as the entire data usage can be displayed or even printed
  158. out.

  161.  RE-LOCATABLE FAST LOADER
  162.  ------------------------

  164.      If you have Jiffy DOS or a fast load utility cartridge you know how
  165. much quicker files can be loaded and saved.  Even though the Commodore 1581
  166. access time is faster than a 1571 drive, this fast loader module has
  167. several advantages over stock 1581 disk drives.  Implementing the RE-
  168. LOCATABLE FAST LOADER and the 1581 drive can now load files up to 900%
  169. faster, it will relocate into memory and this file can be saved for
  170. convenient autobooting on a particular diskette.

  173.  "What More Could You Expect ?"
  174.  ------------------------------

  176.      With all these menu driven utilities and a descriptive spiral bound
  177. manual what more could you expect from a software package?  Well, also
  178. packaged in the manual is another 147 pages in book form called "The 1581
  179. DOS Reference Guide" describing the inside workings of the 1581 operating
  180. system including things that the COMMODORE 1581 user's guide forgot to tell
  181. you about.

  184.  CONCLUSION

  187.      Even with all the great features of The 1581 Tool Kit, it does have a
  188. few shortcomings.  The first is the fact that this program will only run in
  189. the C64 mode and will not fully utilize all of the Commodore 128 mode's
  190. enhanced features.  In addition, two of The 1581 Tool Kit modules, Fast
  191. Formatter and the Error Scanner may not always function properly.  This is
  192. due to the fact that the 1581 drives were originally built for European
  193. consumption according to the technical department at Software Support
  194. International and there are no future plans to upgrade this software by
  195. fixing these problems.
